Nature-Based Psychotherapy

Nature has always brought insight and wisdom into my life. I remember first feeling the calming presence of nature when I was a boy growing up in the Adirondack mountains. I am still reminded on a daily basis of the gentle but poignant lessons that nature teaches living in the Catskills today.

My career began as an Outdoor Guide for clients engaged in various outdoor pursuits in the Adirondacks. I completed my training as a psychotherapist in the early 2000’s and relocated to the Catskills where I served nearly ten years in a community mental health clinic. This experience provided excellent clinical training but was limited by the confines of the office and the parameters of the medical model. My inner passion for the outdoors fostered an outer “joining of opposites” through developing an approach that engages clients in psychotherapy but reaches beyond the confines of the consulting room to promote the integration of the natural elements .

During this journey, I have been a companion to my clients while they make their passage through difficult times and get to know all parts of themselves. I look for opportunities to pass down knowledge and inspirational stories that may guide us through difficult times. I am encouraged by the wisdom discovered in this process and emphasize letting nature shows us how to flow with its rhythms and sharpen our instincts to balance our mind and bodies.

My Help is in the mountain

Where I take myself to heal
The earthly wounds
That people give to me.
I find a rock with sun on it
And a stream where the water runs gentle
And the trees which one by one give me company.
So must I stay for a long time
Until I have grown from the rock
And the stream is running through me
And I cannot tell myself from one tall tree.
Then I know that nothing touches me
Nor makes me run away.
My help is in the mountain
That I take away with me.
